Gloomy Winter's noo awa, soft the westlin breezes blaw. Among the birks o Staneley shaw the mavis sings fu cheerie O. Sweet the crawflower’s early bell decks Gleniffer's dewy dell. Bloomin’ like your bonny sel, my ain, my airtless dearie O. Come my lassie let us stray, o'er Glenkilloch's sunny brae, And blithely spend the gowden day, midst joys that never wearie O. Trees may bud and birds may sing, flowers may bloom and verdure spring. But joy to me they canna bring, unless wi ye my dearie O. Towerin’ o'er the Newton woods, lav'rocks fan the snow white clouds; Siller saughs wi downy buds adorn the banks sae brierie O. Around the silvan fairy nooks, feathery breckans fringe the rocks Beneath the brae the burnie jouks and ilka thing is cheerie O.

O'er yon hill there lives a lassie, And her name I do not know. But, tonight, I'll go and see her. Will she answer yes, or no. Lassie, I have gold and silver. Lassie, I have diamonds store. Lassie, I have ships upon the ocean, And they'll be yours love--if you will be mine. What care I for your gold and silver? What care I for your diamond store? What care I for you ships upon the ocean-- When all I want is a fine young man.

Near Banbridge Town in the County Down One morning last July, Down a boreen green came a sweet colleen And she smiled as she passed me by. She looked so sweet from her two bare feet To the sheen of her nut brown hair. Such a winsome elf, sure I pinched myself For to see I was really there. From Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay and From Galway to Dublin Town, No maid I've seen like the sweet colleen That I met in the County Down. As she onward sped, sure I scratched my head, And I looked with a feelin' rare, And I say's, say's I, to a passer-by, "Whose the maid with the nut brown hair"? He smiled at me and he says, say's he, "That's the gem of Ireland's crown. It's Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann, She's the star of the County Down". At the Harvest Fair she'll be surely there And I'll dress in my Sunday clothes, With my shoes shone bright and my hat cocked right for a smile from my nut brown rose. No pipe I'll smoke, no horse I'll yoke Till my plough turns rust colored brown. Till a smiling bright, by my own firelight Sits the star of the County Down.

about

Steve the Harper Columbus, Ohio

Harp is my passion. I was always enthralled with the harp in "Jack and the Beanstalk". It wasn't until I turned 40 that I came upon Song of the Sea music store while on vacation and my dream was realized. I bought a small harp and began attending workshops studying Scottish and Irish Harp. In 2010, I competed for and was awarded National Scottish Harp Champion of America. ... more
