about

I hope these songs bring you joy.

My mom was always singing around the house as we were growing up. We sang together in the car, around the campfire, and in the red church atop the hill that overlooks the valley in Kentucky where us seven kids grew up. For me, singing was about joy and love and family. My love of music comes from my mom.

When my mom began forgetting, music was what she remembered. When Mom moved to a memory care unit and Dad moved to assisted living, I would visit and sing with their friends. And then visitor restrictions were put into place due to the pandemic. As I searched for a way to stay connected, I quickly made these recordings and mailed a few CD's to Dad so that he could play them for Mom and her friends so that they would continue to sing.

The songs that had worked best on my visits over the years were very simple songs with repeated phrases. Many of these are songs from early childhood. They are the songs that connect to deep memories and are songs that we carry in our hearts.

In early February while I was creating a St. Valentine's card to send to Mom, I got the call that Mom had stopped eating and drinking. Our family was able to gather around to say our final good-byes. To say my farewell, I took a small harp and played some of these familiar melodies, and then phrases that I repeated, and then soft gentle sounds. My sister, Tina, stayed with Mom and played this music and my other music CD's, and she sang for Mom until the end. Mom left with joy in her heart and her own deep love of music sending her on her way.

about

Steve the Harper Columbus, Ohio

Harp is my passion. I was always enthralled with the harp in "Jack and the Beanstalk". It wasn't until I turned 40 that I came upon Song of the Sea music store while on vacation and my dream was realized. I bought a small harp and began attending workshops studying Scottish and Irish Harp. In 2010, I competed for and was awarded National Scottish Harp Champion of America. ... more
